that nike is a hot brand. it's also one of oregon's biggest employers. and now the company is forcing the state's hand saying it wants a 40-year tax deal in exchange for bringing in new jobs or else. cnbc's own brian shactman joins us now with much more. good evening, brian. >> hi, larry. nike is the second biggest employer in the state of oregon. in fact, one of only two fortune 500 companies that have headquarters there. and basically they told the governor they want to expand and if they don't get tax certainty, they are going to be free agents and there are several states trying to poach them. the governor called a special session to pass legislation that says any company, nike, that spend $150 million in new investments over five years could get what they call single sales factor status. i want to explain it to people. that is taxing nike based on in-state sales, not just the combination of sales, real estate value and payroll taxes. it's an absolutely sweet deal for nike. whether it's 40 years or five years, it's going to be in between that range. but it shows you how important

trying to wrap my head around the mass shooting that happened in oregon earlier this week. when i saw this morning that this had happened, i sunk in my chair. you really cannot do justice to what these kids and what these teachers have just experienced." in the classroom where colin goddard was shot at virginia tech, there were 17 people in that classroom. only seven of them survived. two dozen kids were shot and wounded in a high school cafeteria in springfield, oregon in 1998. 1998. the police chief there now, who was a first responder that horrible day at that oregon high school 14 years ago said today about newtown, "i know that there is going to be a lot of emotion in that community." he said," in addition to the victims and the families in newtown, that his heart goes out to the police and the emergency services personnel that responded to deal with this, because this is going to take a toll on a lot of people." beth nimmo whose daughter was killed in the columbine high school mass shooting, she said today, "as far as the parents go, they're not going to know what hit them for a

expired. the chair recognizes the gentleman from oregon, mr. blumenauer, for five minutes. mr. blumenauer: the mall shooting that might have been worse and ended in newtown, connecticut, where it's impossible to imagine that it was worse. it's part of an ongoing pattern of carnage because we lose one life to gun violence every 20 minutes, every hour, every day. the mass murders reclaiming my time page gets the country's attention, but the same total loss of life at sandy hook happens more than twice every day all year long. this is personal for me, not just because the mall shooter was in my district, but i had a high school friend who was killed with a random freak drive-by shooting, my brother took his life with a handgun as a young man. i supported gun provisions at the state and federal level at every opportunity. it might be different now. not just because the horrific image of parade of funerals for children, i submit mayor bloomberg's advocacy for gun safety and mayors who brare the brunt of the gun violence. i welcome the president's leadership and will support any reform that he

there just in time for christmas. the adoption papers at the oregon humane society were signed and the belzer family, they were ready to take their puppy home. when the staff went to go get him, he was gone. he'd been stolen. the humane society put out a plea for help. >> folks in oregon care deeply about pets, and the social media pressure was outstanding. so i think when they realized they had a hot puppy so to speak, they were eager to return him to the shelter. >> we brought him in and our eyes just lit up and we were just really happy. >> the belzer family says john is their best christmas present. so far no arrests, though, have been made for the person, the grinch who made off with that dog. >> yes, but they had a change of heart which is nice. i'm glad that they turned it around. >> he realized he had a hot dog. i mean, people are looking for this animal. >> what kind of dog was that? i've been saying all morning, what is it? is it like a box terrier. >> some sort of chihuahua terrier mix. i think when all else fails they say it's a terrier mix. >> that little dog could be a little bo

in the state of washington and oregon, feet of snow dumped on out here, good news for skiers, but not for those travelling out here. and the good news for the west coast, we'll start to see the system eastbound and you guys will clear out and parts of the rockies, and you can see stuff across parts of western colorado, utah, the state of new mexico and arizona and then as we head into later in the day, christmas eve and christmas day, the storm is going to ramp up. moving through portions of the central plains and produced about six inches of snow in some place that is typically don't see a white christmas and across parts of the texas panhandle, oklahoma, arkansas, missouri and a winter storm watch that has been issued across the state of oklahoma and you're likely going to continue to see these issued out as that system is headed your way and again, significant snow accumulation with up to six inches forecast for some of you. but, unfortunately on the southern end of the system where temperatures are too warm to see snow, we do have some severe weather possible tomorrow. large hail, damaging

's talk about eastern oregon. nine people dead after a tour bus accident on an icy highway. the bus lost control on interstate 84 yesterday and smashed through a guard rail and plunged several hundred feet down a snowy embankment there. the bus was heading back to vancouver from las vegas. it crashed on a section of the blue mountains called dead man's pass. an area so dangerous officials warned it had some of the most severe weather conditions in the northwest. the driver survived but too badly injured to speak with police. >>> winter weather being blamed for dozens of crashes across the country. >> it is dangerous right now. people from the midwest to the northeast still trying to recover from back-to-back snowstorms. today, temperatures taking a massive dive, with some areas bracing for the chilliest air of the season. we get more now from meteorologist jim dickey. hi, jim. >> good morning. cold air in place across much of the north and east on this new year's eve. these are your early morning temperatures. 5 in burlington. 9 in portland and 18 in boston. as we switch gears now in the
